A Week of Family, Culture, and Discovery in Early Pre-K
Dear parents,
We hope this blog finds you well! We had a wonderful week in our Early Pre-K classroom, filled with opportunities to explore, discover, and learn more about our families and cultures. Through engaging discussions and hands-on activities, our students continued developing their understanding of family, identity, and the wonderful diversity within our classroom.
During our large-group time, we began by sharing how our mornings had been and giving each of our students an opportunity to greet their friends in their home languages. We sang our Good Morning Song, checked who was present and absent, reviewed the days of the week and months of the year, and counted up to 20. We also revisited the shapes we had learned about previously and introduced a new three-dimensional shape, the sphere, encouraging our students to observe its round shape and connect it to familiar objects around them.
Throughout the week, we explored the importance of family and the special people who make up our families. Our discussions encouraged our students to think about their family members, share their ideas, and learn that every family has its own unique story. These conversations helped create meaningful opportunities to build connections and develop an appreciation for the people who are important in our lives.
We also explored different countries and cultures, learning about national flags, colors, traditional foods, dances, and languages. Our students had opportunities to recognize their family’s flags, notice their different colors and designs, and learn about the diverse backgrounds represented in our classroom. We also practiced greeting one another in different languages, discovering that although we may speak different languages, we can all connect through simple greetings and friendly interactions. These experiences encouraged curiosity, respect, and appreciation for our cultural differences.
Another exciting experience was sharing our cultural bags with our classmates. Our students enjoyed exploring the special items brought from home and discovering what made each item meaningful. This activity encouraged sharing, communication, and learning from one another while celebrating the unique traditions and backgrounds within our classroom community.
