Our Week In Pre-K
Greetings dear parents!
How was your week? Our week was great. We had a great time learning and exploring together.
Large group
This week, large group sessions were as exciting and lively as ever! As usual we sing a song, read a book, and talk about the date, the month and the year. We also discussed Ethiopian New Year and in this season what kind of flowers will grow, the color of the flower, and how in Ethiopia we use a different calendar than other countries. We also sang a New Years song together, which the children loved!
Math
This week in math our class made shapes with Popsicle sticks. We started by talking about basic shapes like squares, triangles, and rectangles. Then, we encouraged the children to try making their own shapes using the Popsicle sticks. They tried with different shapes and combinations. In addition to this, we talked about the number of sides and corners each shape has. This activity was a fun and interactive way for the kids to learn about shapes.
Science
This week we did a simple and exciting experiment using pepper as a metaphor for germs. We put 2 boxes of water with black pepper in one and water and soap in the other. We demonstrated the activity, which was that we dipped our hands into the pepper water, noticing how are hands are covered in pepper flakes, the “germs” and no longer clean. Then, we dipped our hands in the next water container with soap in it and saw our hands get clean. We then gave the children a chance to try it for themselves. This activity was great because it lead to a very fruitful discussion with the children about how the soap helps remove germs and keeps us healthy. It was a fantastic visual way to introduce the class to the concept of germs and the importance of hand washing.
Literacy- Journal
Journaling can be a great way for our students to express their thoughts and creativity. Our little ones took a moment to reflect on their day through their very own journals. Here’s a peek into their delightful entries:
"I draw a very big monster!" Solomon
"I draw a rainbow lava!" Leo
"I make a heart and rainbow!" Mitsuki
"I make a big big big tower mansion!" Leul
The children were so excited to share their thoughts and experiences from their journal. Their journals are a wonderful way for them to express their creativity and reflect on their activities. We’re looking forward to more fun and learning in the coming days!
