Dear Parents,
We hope you’ve had a wonderful week! Our Early Pre-K class has been buzzing with energy, curiosity, and so much learning. This week, your little ones explored important skills through activities in math, literacy, and group games. These hands-on experiences helped build their confidence, thinking skills, and love for learning. Keep reading to hear all about the fun we had!
Large Group
Large group time is always a special way to start our day together. This week, we began by talking about what we had for breakfast. This simple routine helps the children build language skills, practice speaking in front of others, and connect with their friends.
We also focused on the number 6 this week. The children were excited to hold up six fingers and show that they understood the number. They practiced counting to six and looking for the number throughout the day.
Another exciting part of our large group was learning the letter “E” and its sound. The children enjoyed practicing the sound and thinking of words that begin with the letter E. This helps strengthen their early literacy and listening skills.
Math
During math this week, we focused on understanding and creating patterns. The children learned how to notice things that repeat and practiced predicting what comes next. They had fun taking turns, following along, and sharing their ideas with friends.
Learning about patterns helps children grow in many ways. It builds their ability to focus, pay attention to details, and solve problems. It also supports their early thinking skills as they learn to look for order and structure in the world around them.
Ethiopian Center
This week in our Ethiopian Center, the children had a wonderful time exploring different parts of Ethiopian culture through play and imagination. We talked about our plan to make bread next week, which got everyone excited! The children showed a lot of interest and curiosity, asking questions and sharing their own ideas.
After our discussion, the children began to explore the different items in the center. They used their imaginations to pretend they were making coffee, cooking shiro, and preparing food together—just like at home! This type of pretend play helps build language, creativity, and social skills.
They also enjoyed playing with traditional Ethiopian musical instruments. It was so joyful to see them explore sounds, take turns, and express themselves through music.
The Ethiopian Center continues to be a meaningful and fun space for the children to connect with culture, practice everyday routines, and play in creative ways.
Literacy
In literacy this week, we began introducing the Zoo-Phonics flashcards, focusing on letters A through E. The children explored the cards with curiosity and excitement, taking time to look closely at each picture and connect it to the letter. We practiced saying the sounds together, and the children were eager to repeat them with confidence. To make the experience even more engaging, we used fun actions to go along with each sound. The children enjoyed moving their bodies, acting out the motions, and making the sounds in playful ways. This multisensory approach gave them the chance to see, hear, and do all at the same time, which helps them remember the letters more easily.
Throughout the week, we returned to the cards often, giving the children many chances to review and practice. They enjoyed recognizing familiar letters, celebrating when they could name them, and helping their friends remember the sounds. These joyful moments not only supported their early literacy skills but also encouraged teamwork, listening, and sharing. By focusing on letters A through E, the children are beginning to build a strong foundation in phonics. Each small step, from saying a sound to connecting it with an action, helps grow their confidence and excitement for reading.
