Dear Parents,
We have had a wonderful week filled with fun and engaging activities that supported the children’s learning and social growth. It was great to see them share ideas, work together, and build friendships. We look forward to another exciting week ahead! Read on to see what we were up to…
Large Group
Our large group sessions this week have been delightful! We continued our color identification work this week with the color green, where all our activities were related to the color green. We started by discussing the different green materials displayed on the board. After that, we took attendance and sang the “Good Morning” song. Finally, we read a book titled How I Love My Mommy Again, followed by a short discussion based on students’ questions.
Gymnastics
Our gymnastics session was not only about doing workouts — it also helped students identify colors, follow directions, and practice listening skills. We played a fun activity called “Jumping on Musical Dots,” where students listened for color cues and jumped onto the correct colored dots. Most of them did very well, while some still need a bit more practice with their gross motor skills, listening, and color recognition, which is useful information for future activities we will plan. We guided and supported them throughout the activity, and everyone had a blast!
Literacy
Our literacy session focused on continuing to strengthen students’ ability to follow verbal instructions. This time, we added a new element to make it more engaging — following directions that included identifying and moving with a rectangle shape. The goal was not only to recognize the shape but to practice listening carefully and responding to instructions step by step.
The students showed wonderful progress compared to our previous session. Most of them were able to follow the given directions with confidence, moving along the lines correctly and staying focused throughout the activity. We noticed that they are becoming more attentive listeners and are learning how to control their movements as they respond to verbal cues.
This activity also supported several important developmental areas such as listening comprehension, hand-eye coordination, focus, and spatial awareness. Some students still needed a bit of support and repetition, but with guidance, they were able to complete the task successfully.
Art
Our art session was connected to our ongoing theme of the color green. In our previous activity, we explored green by doing leaf stamping on paper using green paint. This time, we took the experience a step further by sticking real leaves onto paper. The children first applied glue carefully, then pressed the leaves down, creating beautiful green-themed artwork.
The activity was not only fun and exciting but also very meaningful. It helped students strengthen their fine motor skills, color identification, and creativity. As they worked, we discussed the different shades and textures of green found in nature, encouraging them to describe what they saw and felt.
To make the session even more engaging, we sang the song “What Is Your Favorite Color?”, which brought lots of smiles and participation from everyone. The children joyfully sang along while proudly showing their green leaf artwork. Overall, it was a lively and creative art session that allowed students to explore the color green through both art and music.
Ethiopian Center
During this week’s Ethiopian Center session, the children had a wonderful time exploring different traditional instruments, clothing, and dances from various parts of Ethiopia. They listened to the sounds of the instruments, tried playing some of them, and enjoyed moving to the rhythm of traditional music. Everyone was very excited to wear different traditional outfits!
At the end of the session, we had a short discussion with the children about what they enjoyed most and planned together for our next Ethiopian Center activity, which we are all looking forward to!
Science
Our science session was full of excitement! We made green playdough together as part of our sensory and exploration activity. First, everyone put on their art smocks to stay clean and ready for the experiment. We started by talking about what we were going to do and asked the children questions about the materials we had — water, oil, and flour. The children enjoyed touching and smelling the flour first to describe how it felt and looked. Then, we slowly added water and oil, mixing them together while talking about how the texture started to change. Afterwards, we added a few drops of green food coloring, and everyone was so excited to see the color appear and spread through the mixture. The children mixed, squished, and rolled the dough, exploring the new texture and color. It was a fun, hands-on experience that encouraged curiosity, creativity, and teamwork!
