Dear Parents,
We hope this blog finds you well! In the Pre-K class, our week was action-packed, filled with engaging activities. In math, we focused on creating IDs and recapping previously covered topics. In literacy, we learned to write CVC and two-letter words. Additionally, we enjoyed journaling, gymnastics, and library visits. Of course, we spent plenty of time on our students' favorite subject: science, where we continued learning about the four seasons.
Overall, our students are thoroughly engaged and participatory, having fun while working together as a group and individually. Read on for more details about our week...
Large Group
This week, our large group was a delight as usual! We revised all the shapes we’ve previously covered, focusing especially on the pentagon and semicircle.
Additionally, we reviewed the "sh" digraph. This helps remind them of their previous learning about this digraph and will assist them as they finish learning about CVC words.
As always, we conducted our calendar and caterpillar activities. For our morning message, we related it to our daily activities; both to give our students a general idea of what we will be focusing on and to prepare them for the day.
Furthermore, our students have truly grasped their class job responsibilities and have been doing amazing work, showing significant progress in every aspect of learning. They know the routine, the classroom rules, and what comes after large group time, whether it's science, literacy, or math. They can articulate this independently without prompting, which we are glad to see.
Math
This week in math, the students created their own identification cards! For the past few weeks, we have been learning about measurements, covering various subtopics. In the last two weeks, our students measured their height and weight, and then we collected their data. Based on these two measurements, they made their own ID cards along with their pictures. Each card includes their name, height, and weight, concluding this topic in our math sessions. Creating their own IDs made them happy and proud, as it was a responsibility they enjoyed.
In the second session, we reviewed the topic on measurements, and the class discussed and recapped what they had learned. Next week, the class will start another topic in math.
Literacy
This week in literacy, we focused on strengthening our writing and blending skills as the students began working on their very own mini CVC books. The excitement was clear from the start, especially when they were invited to choose their favorite color mini book to work with. This small choice gave them a sense of ownership and motivation to begin writing.
To support their learning, we used wooden CVC word spinners during the session. The students spun the wheels to create different consonant-vowel-consonant combinations, then practiced blending the sounds together to read the word. After successfully sounding out each word, they carefully wrote it in their mini books.
Science
In science this week, our students began an exciting hands-on project connected to our learning about the four seasons. We transformed our class mirror into a beautiful seasonal display by dividi
ng it into four sections, with each section representing one of the seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter.
The students started by sketching two trees as the base of our project. After carefully drawing their outlines, they moved on to painting. Using brown for the tree trunks and green for the leaves, they brought their first two trees to life. One tree represents summer, full of bright green leaves, and the other represents spring, showing fresh growth and new beginnings.
This project will continue next week as we complete the fall tree and the winter tree, adding more details and seasonal characteristics to each section. The students are very excited to see the full transformation once all four seasons are displayed together on our mirror.
This activity supported many areas of development. It encouraged teamwork, as the children worked together to plan and share materials. It strengthened their artistic expression as they explored colors and represented seasonal changes visually. It also enhanced their fine motor skills through sketching and painting carefully within their designs.
Art
This week in the Pre-K class, we continued from last week's art project. Our students painted each planet, and had a blast! First, they sat in two different groups, and then we assigned one planet to each group. Based on the colors of the planets, they painted them beautifully. While they were painting, we discussed the planets, their colors, and their differences. Our students really remembered the lessons they had learned in the past months.
