Our Week In Pre-K
Greetings dear parents!
We hope you have had a great week. Here in the Pre K Class, we had a fun filled, fascinating educational week. As a reminder, next week on Thursday (September 26) we will have an early dismissal at 12pm for Demera, the traditional Ethiopian holiday. We will also be having a celebration starting 11am, including a bonfire and more fun! Further information on that will be coming out soon. The following Friday (September 27) the school will be closed for the holiday as well.
Large group
Large group is our favorite session every day! During this time, we are able to see how the children interact with each other, and it gives a great forum for the students to share about their lives and discuss the things that are important to them. Plus, we get to sing, read and more! This week, we sang a different song, which everyone enjoyed very much. We also read together, and discussed how our weekend went. We were so happy to see the children sharing plenty of new ideas with the group. We also go over the day, month and year in our large group sessions. Another exciting and engaging routine of ours is counting the caterpillar! Every day, we count the amount of days we’ve been in school and one student writes the day of school we are on now. We are going to do this until we reach 100 days. Not only is this an interactive way to see the passing of the days, but it also helps the kids to learn counting and the habit of doing something consistently.
Math
In our math class this week the class did a new activity- counting with playdough and Q Tips! Incorporating counting activities into playdough play enhances early math skills while keeping learning fun and interactive. The activity consisted of each child getting a piece of playdough, which they could use to make a shape or just flatten. Then, we asked them to take some Q tips and put them in the play dough, to count how many Q tips and let us know the number they had. As a wonderful bonus, the playdough we used was made by the students themselves during a science session! Using these materials makes counting an enjoyable hands-on experience for Pre-K children. This simple and effective activity fosters a love for learning while developing essential skills.
Literacy
This week in our literacy session we did an activity sorting out objects that start with B and C. We set out different objects with those letters and mixed them together and had the children sort real objects into B and C categories. The kids sorted out the objects and it was really helpful to make learning engaging and helps reinforce letter recognition and literacy skills.
Science
In our science session, the class tried something both hands on, enjoyable and practical- making playdough! Making playdough is the perfect way to introduce the child to simple skills like measuring and following a series of instructions. This kind of activity also develops hand, eye, arm and body coordination and finger and hand muscles through squeezing, patting, rolling and pinching. For making the dough we used salt, oil, flour, water and food color. Then, by mixing all ingredients the children made their own playdough. The kids were so happy and it was a blast!
