Dear parents,
We hope this blog finds you well. In the Pre-K class, our week was filled with fun activities, including counting, learning letters, and exploring science and art. Every child had a great time and learned through play! Read on to hear some more details…
Large group
As we always mention, our large group is a place where every child can build confidence, learn from each other, and participate in activities such as learning a new song, reading a book, discussing our calendar, and learning letters and numbers through morning messages. These are very fun and exciting sessions for the Pre-K class. This week was no exception, and our students had a blast having conversations with each other, going through our morning routine and of course, learning new things and preparing for the days ahead.
Science
This week, our class learned about fruits and vegetables. In our first session, we discussed which items are fruits and which are vegetables. After naming them, we brought toys representing some fruits and vegetables from our café center, and then our students sorted them based on their categories.
In our second session, we tested some fruits like oranges, bananas, and apples, and vegetables, such as carrots, potatoes, and broccoli. At this point, we provided them and placed everything on the table. Then, the students went around and picked items like a buffet before sitting down to eat. While they ate, we discussed which items were their favorites and why it’s important to eat fruits and vegetables. All our students enjoyed the tasting experience, and were able to connect concepts like nutrition and healthy eating to their everyday lives.
Math
This week, for math, our Pre-K class learned to count and match! In the first session, we used number cards to count with blocks and identify the numbers, using the classroom materials.
In the next class, we worked on a worksheet that involved matching pictures with numbers by counting the pictures. They found a number and matched it, which helped them recognize the numbers.
Literacy
This week in our literacy sessions, we talked about the letters and their corresponding Zoo-Phonics characters to help the children catch the sounds and recognize the letters. We also sang a letter song to help further familiarize the students with the sounds.
In our second session, we had a mystery basket activity. We placed different materials in a box, and the children took them out, looked at them, and then named each toy. They matched the toys to the letters by recognizing the first letter of each toy. This really helps them recall the items, sound them out, and recognize the letters.
Art
This week in art, we worked on a coloring activity that combined science concepts with creative exploration! Connecting projects interdisciplinarily helps ideas to become more familiar for students, and introduces them to how different things connect to each other. To add an extra layer of interest, we did our art session outside- the whole class went to the grassy playground area, set up the table and chairs, and the students colored fruits and vegetables based on their colors of choice.
