Dear Family, We hope you all had an amazing week! Here in our kindergarten class, we experienced an exciting blend of fun and learning, all thanks to your incredible participation. Let’s take a delightful stroll through our week together!
We also want to wish you all a very Happy Easter if your family celebrates it, and for those who don’t, enjoy the long weekend! We look forward to seeing all of you back on Tuesday (April 22).
Large Group
As always, we kicked things off by setting the date and diving into new sight words. Continuing our exploration of inventions, we learned about three remarkable scientists from our own backgrounds: Dr. Aklilu Lemma from Ethiopia, Tu Youyou from China, and George Washington Carver from the U.S. This week fostered a deeper understanding among our children that scientists and inventors come from all over the globe! The highlight? After our sessions, our children went home, excitedly sharing what they learned and bringing back fun facts to share with the class. Our large group sessions were buzzing with energy and curiosity!
“Tu Youyou looks like Yichen’s grandma” -Junior
“Dr. Aklilu is from jijiga and I saw his video at home” -Abigel
“Aklilu is my drivers name” -Umar
“I know George Washington” -Hekima
"I will invent a robot that eats like a human" -Lucas
Literacy
This week in literacy was particularly special! We introduced the concept of writing “A Letter to Loved Ones.” Each child took time to think about messages they wanted to share with their parents, jotting them down on paper and sealing them in envelopes. The twist? Parents read the letters without any help from our children! After reading, they wrote back fun responses and returned them in the same envelope. This gave our children a chance to read their parents’ replies aloud in class. It was one fantastic way to practice writing and reading! The excitement in the room was palpable, and we’re so grateful for your enthusiastic participation.
“I don’t have anything to ask them, I want to say thank you” -Leayene
“Dear mom and dad, you’re the best” -Adelene
“I can’t write in Chinese but my mom don’t know english” -Tang Tang
“Are we going to read for them?” -Yeabsera
Math
In math, we delved into multiplication, focusing on the concept of repeated addition. This week, we specifically studied the magic numbers 0 and 1. Our children were thrilled to learn that any number multiplied by 0 is 0, and any number multiplied by 1 is itself! They practiced on the board and tackled worksheets with these concepts. To our delight, when we mixed the questions, they excelled! Their understanding of multiplication was impressive, and their enthusiasm was contagious!
“This is the easiest thing ever” -Lucas
“What happens when it’s 1*0?” -Adelene
“Even 1 trillion times zero is zero” -Umar
Science
Science lessons are always a hit! This week we explored the fascinating world of our bodies—not just the parts we can see, but the incredible organs inside us! After introducing the term "anatomy," we used picture aids to help our children visualize and feel the importance of these inner workings. The discussion was lively, with endless questions sparking curiosity. During our hands-on activity, our children matched body parts to their correct locations on a blank outline. It was a joy to see their excitement as they learned about the importance of each organ. We can't wait to dive deeper into this topic next week!
“I hate surgery I don’t want to have them” -Leayene
“I want to drink water to make my kidney happy” -Lucas
“My pee is clean like water and it’s not yellow” -Hekima
“My brain lets me do math and activities” -Adelene
“We can feel our muscles and we can protect our skin by washing” -Umar
Art
In art this week, we prepared for our upcoming seasonal project by creating drawings that represent each of the four seasons. Our children divided their papers into four sections and illustrated what they know about each season. From blooming flowers in spring to children playing in summer, fallen leaves in autumn, and delicate snowflakes in winter, their creativity shone through in every piece! The artwork was nothing short of incredible, showcasing their imaginative interpretations.
“These are kids having fun in summer” -Adelene
“It’s cold and ice and snow in winter” -Yeabsera
