Dear parents,

We hope your week has been as bright and joyful as ours! Our Early Pre-K learners spent the past week full of curiosity, excitement, and discovery. Through engaging, hands-on activities, they explored math, art, science, and library sessions. Each experience sparked their imagination while nurturing important skills like cognitive growth, number recognition, and problem-solving. Take a look at the wonderful highlights that made your child’s week truly special!

Large group

This week our large group session was filled with joyful learning and exploration! The children began their morning by diving into different areas of discovery. They were excited to explore the 2D shape oval, noticing how it looks different from a circle and finding examples around them. They also focused on the number 5, proudly holding up their five fingers to show their understanding and connection to the number. We also introduced the letter “d” and its sound, as the children practiced identifying the letter and saying the sound clearly, building their early literacy skills.

As part of the morning message, the children shared their thoughts and ideas about the upcoming “Meskel celebration”, which encouraged them to express themselves and learn more about the culture and traditions, and everyone joined together in practicing the traditional song “Abebayhush,” singing with joy and excitement.

In general the large group session beautifully combined math, literacy, cultural learning, and music, giving the children opportunities to grow in multiple areas while having fun together.

Math

In this week's math session, the children had an exciting and interactive learning experience! The classroom was turned into a little adventure ground where number flashcards from 1 to 10 were hidden in different spots. As the teacher called out each number, the children eagerly searched around the room, hunting for the correct flashcard.

This engaging activity helped the children practice their number recognition while also reinforcing their ability to connect the spoken number with its written form. They were focused, enthusiastic, and delighted each time they found the right card. The game also encouraged teamwork, listening skills, and concentration, making learning both fun and meaningful.

We are proud of how quickly the children responded and how much joy they showed in identifying the numbers. Through such hands-on play, they are building strong foundations in math while developing confidence in their learning journey.

Science

In this week's science session, the children explored their sense of taste through a fun testing activity. They were given different items—banana, orange, lemon, sugar, and salt—to taste and then describe their experiences.

After trying each one, the children expressed what they noticed and worked on sorting the items into the categories of sour, sweet, salty, and bitter. For example, they identified bananas and sugar tasted sweet, lemons were sour, salt was salty, and oranges had a mix of sweet and sour.

This activity not only made them curious and excited but also helped strengthen their sensory awareness, vocabulary, and categorization skills. The children enjoyed sharing their thoughts and learning that everyday foods can be grouped in different ways. We are delighted to see how confidently they participated and how much they enjoyed this hands-on exploration of taste!

Art

This week in our art session, the children joyfully created beautiful collages of the Ethiopian flower Adey Abeba on A4 size paper. Using different art materials, they carefully stuck the bright yellow flowers to form their own unique designs. The activity not only encouraged creativity and fine motor skills but also gave the children an opportunity to connect with the culture and traditions.

As they worked on their collages, we talked about the importance of Adey Abeba and how it blooms during the season of Meskel. This discussion helped the children anticipate and feel the excitement of the upcoming Ethiopian Meskel celebration. The session was filled with happiness, teamwork, and cultural pride, as the children expressed themselves through art. We are proud of their efforts and creativity, and their bright flower collages will serve as a warm reminder of the festive spirit.

Library

This week during our library session, the children had a wonderful opportunity to explore books on their own. Each child was given a book to look through and enjoy independently. This experience helped them begin to discover the exciting world of books and stories in their own unique way.

By turning pages, looking at pictures, and noticing words, the children developed a sense of curiosity and imagination. Exploring books by themselves also encouraged them to become more familiar with stories, characters, and ideas, laying the foundation for a lifelong love of reading. We are delighted to see their growing interest in books and the joy they experience as they step into the magical world of stories!
