Greetings family, it's wonderful to have you all back for another term of our weekly blog. The second term is off to a fantastic start with tons of fun activities and recaps! This week, we engaged in a variety of fun and educational activities. Let's take you through what we've been up to.

Large Group

Our large group sessions always set the tone for our daily activities. During these sessions, we keep track of the date, weather, sight words of the day, rhyme time, and other educational content. We also generate discussion by talking about the day's themes and giving our children clues about what they'll be learning in literacy, math, science, or art class on the whiteboard along with the morning message. We intersperse songs throughout the topics to help engage our children and focus their attention. This week, we recapped the digraphs our children learned last semester. They practiced writing them and gave examples of words that include each digraph. We also talked about our upcoming 100 Days of School celebration and asked our children to share their ideas about how we should celebrate that special day.

“Like both ship that is like a boat and sheep the animal starts with ‘sh’” -Leul

“I want to make a princess on a canvas and I want to take it home” -Liyat

“Throne for ‘th’” -Yadon

“Living things move and eat and grow but not living things stay the same” -Kian

“I’m from Namibia, so Africa is my continent” -Lubono

Literacy

This week in literacy, we strengthened our reading skills in a fun and hands-on way. Our children worked with jigsaw puzzle words, putting the pieces together to form sentences. Some children created their own imaginative sentences, while others focused on sounding out each letter and blending the sounds to read what the words said. It was wonderful to see them helping one another, sharing ideas, and celebrating each small success together. Along with reading, we practiced sentence writing by focusing on spacing between words. Our children learned how giving words their own “space” helps writing become clearer and easier to read. Through these activities, our children built confidence, teamwork, and a growing love for reading and writing all while having fun!

“This is he, me, she and together it’s he me she” -Yemariam

“I’m making words with Leul and it’s big” -Ismael

“This says black like my shoes” -Samuel

Math

As we are in our reading era, we blended math with literacy by introducing number words from 1 to 10. Our children explored how each number is spelled and read, learning that math also has words; just like reading and writing. They practiced identifying number words, reading them together from the board, and tracing them on worksheets. This meaningful connection helped our children see how numbers, letters, and words are all connected, making learning more exciting and easier to understand. It was a wonderful way to build both math and reading skills at the same time!

“I finish fast so I will have a new paper” -Ismael

“I didn’t do the first one cause I was late in the morning but now I finished both worksheets” -Leul

“This is eight” -Yemariam

“I want like Ismael” -Betselot

“This is super easy” -Kian

“But I like the numbers not the letters cause it’s so hard but the numbers are easy” -Liyat

Science

This week in science, we introduced a new lesson on living and non-living things. We began with a class discussion where our children explored what makes living things different from non-living ones. They shared funny ideas, thoughtful theories, and eagerly participated in the conversation. To make the learning come alive, we went outside on a nature hunt. Our children excitedly spotted grass, plants, their friends, and even tiny creatures like ants and worms as living things, while identifying playground equipment and other materials as non-living. This hands-on adventure helped them connect science to the real world in a joyful and meaningful way.

“Look at our plants, they’re living things” -Leul

“All our friends and teachers are living things but the toys are non living” -Lubono

“Look, living thing” -Betselot

“The bunnies are living things” -Liyat

“My jacket is non living thing but I am” -Kian

Art

This week in art, our children explored eraser art, and it was an exciting discovery! They began by coloring the entire paper using pencils, covering the page with bold and bright shades. Once the paper was fully colored, the real magic began; using the eraser at the back of the pencil, they erased lines, shapes, and patterns to create their artwork. Our children were amazed to see how erasing could become a way of drawing! This activity helped them understand that mistakes are okay and that art can be changed and recreated. Through this process, they practiced creativity, problem solving, and confidence, all while having so much fun experimenting with a new technique.

“I love this so much guys it’s so fun” -Yadon

“So when we make mistakes we erase it with a pencil it’s so funny” -Liyat

“I want to do it again” -Yemariam

“Look my T-Rex I make it with eraser” -Samuel
