Dear parents,
We hope this blog finds you well. Here in our Pre-K class, our week was filled with fun activities related to counting, learning letters, exploring science, art and more! Read on for a breakdown of Pre-K’s educational adventures this week…
Large group
Our large group sessions are often some of the most humorous, engaging, dynamic times we spend together as a class. We explore different areas of learning through singing songs, reading books, and discussing with each other. This week, like last week, we continued to learn the same letters: S, N, A, P, I, and T. This repetition helps our students become familiar with these letters and their sounds, and it we’ve seen the results speak for themselves! Over the next couple of weeks, we will introduce five new letters.
In addition to letters, we also learned about semi-circles and ovals, along with other simple shapes. Next week, we will introduce a new shape as well. Overall, this week has been filled with many wonderful large group moments.
Literacy
This week in literacy, the class traced letters and practiced writing them. The letters we have been learning for the past two weeks are S, N, A, P, I, and T. After practicing the sounds and letters in class, we provided them with a printed worksheet that had traceable letters. They traced the letters and tried to rewrite them over and over again. After they finished, we practiced the sounds again. Literacy activities that combine written and verbal modalities help improve their fine motor skills, letter recognition, and other areas.
Math
In math this week, we had so much fun exploring patterns. We created a caterpillar during our large group sessions, with 2 colors alternating. After discussing patterns in class, we brought out different toys to make ABAB patterns using similar color themes as our caterpillar. We look forward to seeing how the class continues to explore patterns over the course of the school year!
Science
This week in science, the Pre-K class conducted a germ experiment. After discussing germs, what they are, and how to prevent them together in class, we went outside to perform the experiment practically. We prepared a box of clear water, another box with water and soap, and some glitter. First, we sprinkled glitter on the children's hands and asked them to try to remove it. They dipped their hands in the water box, but the glitter (representing germs) didn’t come off. Finally, they put their hands in the soapy water and washed them. They were surprised to see their hands clean and free of glitter, which represented the germs. Afterward, they rinsed their hands. Through this experiment, our students clearly saw how germs can be removed from our hands.
Art
This week in art, the Pre-K class got busy working on their very own collages! First, we went outside to our second compound, where we provided the students with different colored papers and scissors. They cut the paper into small pieces, and after they finished cutting, we gave them plain paper, glue, and brushes. They then collaged the small pieces of colored paper onto the plain paper. In this activity, our students practiced cutting, which helps improve their fine motor skills. The class had such a wonderful time with this activity that they’re already requesting more similar ones for the future!
