Learning Through Patterns, Lines and Science In Pre-K!

We hope this blog finds you well! Here in our Pre-K class, our week was filled with fun and engaging activities related to counting, learning letters, exploring science, and more! Read on for a breakdown of our Pre-K educational adventures this week…

Large group

Our large group sessions are often some of the most humorous, engaging, and dynamic times we spend together as a class. We explore different areas of learning through singing new songs related to what we are learning, reading books, and having meaningful discussions with one another. We work on learning letters and counting, and enjoyed our daily caterpillar activities. We practice these skills throughout the day while completing our classroom job responsibilities, giving the children many opportunities to reinforce what they have learned.

Math

In math this week, we had so much fun exploring patterns! During our large group sessions, we created a caterpillar using two colors in an alternating pattern.

After discussing patterns together, we brought out different toys and encouraged the students to create ABAB patterns using different color combinations of their choice. The children enjoyed choosing their colors and arranging the toys to create their own patterns. We look forward to seeing how the class continues to explore and build on their understanding of patterns throughout the school year.

Literacy

This week in our literacy sessions, we introduced the letters S,N,A,P,I,T. These letters were selected because their sounds are easy for the children to hear and practice. During our first session, we introduced each letter and practiced its sound. We continued reinforcing these sounds during our large group sessions throughout the week. During our second session, we provided the students with worksheets featuring traceable letters. The children practiced tracing each letter and then tried writing the letters independently several times. After completing the worksheets, we practiced the letter sounds once again. Literacy activities that combine writing and verbal practice help strengthen fine motor skills, letter recognition, and early phonics development.

Science

This week in Science, our Pre-K class conducted a fun and hands-on germ experiment. After discussing what germs are and how we can prevent them from spreading, we went outside to conduct our experiment. We prepared a plate, water, soap, and some black pepper.

First, we poured water onto the plate and sprinkled black pepper over the surface. The black pepper represented germs. Then, the students dipped one finger into the soap and gently touched the surface of the water. They were amazed to see the black pepper quickly move away from the soap, leaving a clean area!

This simple experiment helped our students visualize how soap helps remove germs from our hands. They were excited and surprised by what they observed, making learning about hygiene both meaningful and fun. Afterward, the students rinsed their hands and talked about the importance of washing their hands regularly to help keep themselves and others healthy.

Every Tuesday is our library day, so we will be sending a book that your child picked from our library, which will be returned after a week on library day.

Every Friday is our art day so please send your child with art-appropriate clothing.
