Week 4 in Kindergarten; Learning Through Fun!

Dear Family,

How did your week go by? Ours was full of fun, learning, and lots of exploring! Here’s a little peek into what we did this week… Read on!

Large Group

Besides fixing our calendar, helping our Number Caterpillar grow, singing songs in between, and reading our Large Group book “A Squeeze and a Squash” to settle into our day and start together in a circle, we always have a topic that we focus on and practice throughout the week. This week, our topic was Prepositions, and we made it fun by using things we already have around us! We used chairs and an empty carton box, and our children took turns using their personal bottles to show different prepositions. They placed their bottles on, under, beside, behind, in front of, and inside the different objects while saying each preposition aloud. We even added some movement to our learning by having our children pass an object under each other’s legs and exploring what it means to be between go under!

“I went to the church with my dad and my brother didn’t want to go and my dad told me to say ‘Allahu Akbar’ and then I couldn’t say it so my dad gave me his phone and then we went to Sky light to play and my mommy gave me 5 princess lipsticks and we went to Japanese restaurant and I ate rainbow sushi and I drank strawberry juice” -Layan

“Sunday me and my dad ate pizza and and burger and I ate half pizza and half burger and I drank Fanta and my dad gave me his phone and at night I sleep” -Noam

“I was home and it rained and the ice came and my brother, my sister, and me we opened the winds and we touched the ice” -Elion

Literacy

We continued with our reading this week by focusing on ending sounds and rhyming words. Our children practiced listening carefully to words and identifying the sounds they hear at the end. We also worked on matching words that rhyme and sound alike at the end. To make sure everyone had the right level of challenge, our children worked on different worksheets based on their individual levels. It was lovely seeing them practice, think, and build more confidence with their reading skills.

Math

Since we learned about estimation last week, we thought it was time to introduce another fun Math word; Subitizing! We started by practicing with our fingers. Our children showed different numbers using their fingers and practiced recognizing the amount without counting each finger one by one. After practicing together, they worked on a subitizing worksheet during our first session. For our second session, we brought out the dominoes! Our children took turns looking at the dots and saying how many they saw without counting them one by one. They had so much fun with it, and it was exciting to see how quickly their little brains could recognize the amounts!

Science

Since we’ve officially started the Fall season this September, we started exploring what this season brings with it! During our first session, we talked about what a season is and the changes we can notice during Fall. We talked about things like leaves changing colors and falling from the trees and the changes we see around us. We also enjoyed learning through the song “Seasons of the Year” by Have fun Teaching, which made our discussion even more fun! For our second session, we went on a little “Fall I Spy” adventure! Our children looked for things we might see during the Fall season on their worksheets and also practiced their counting along the way.

Art

We continued exploring our primary colors through patterns this week. Our children used paint to create their own patterns, but this time, they got to choose the sequence of colors themselves. It was so much fun watching them carefully choose which color should come next and concentrate on creating their own patterns. Each little artist had their own idea, and we loved watching their personalities come through in their colorful creations!

Reminders and notes:

* Please make sure that our children are wearing suitable clothes on Monday as we have art class and activities get messy sometimes.

* Every Wednesday and Friday is library day. Our children will be bringing home a book of their choice in their library folder, so please make sure to read the book with them over the weekend. Please return the folder the following Wednesday so they can get a new one. • Every Tuesday, we have gymnastics, so please ensure that our children come dressed in comfortable and loose fitting sports attire to facilitate their exercise.

* Every Friday, we have football, so please make sure our children wear their football jerseys if they have them, or any comfortable shorts.
