Dear Family,

Happy Ethiopian New Year! We hope you had a joyful holiday with your loved ones. In our kindergarten world, of course, we’ve been busy exploring, learning, and enjoying our days together. What made this week extra special was our focus on mixing primary colors to discover the magic of new secondary ones. Let’s take you through each part of our week…..

Large Group

As always, Large Group was one of our favorite times of the day. It’s a chance for us to gather as a class, calm ourselves, share our thoughts and feelings, and go over the day’s activities. This week, our letters were c, e, d, r, m, h, and k, and our numbers of the week were 20–29. Alongside practicing these, we also explored color mixing as part of our weekly theme. On our board, we placed the primary color cards on one side and the secondary color results on the other. Our children took turns picking up a card and matching it with the colors they thought would mix to create that specific result. It was such an interactive way to connect literacy, math, and science with our theme of the week!

Literacy

Our literacy sessions this week were full of discovery and excitement! In our first activity, our children worked on a Beginning Sounds worksheet. They looked at pictures and circled the correct beginning sounds, which helped them practice listening carefully to letter sounds while also building confidence in connecting sounds to symbols. For the second activity, we turned the classroom into a mini adventure with a Write the Room game. Armed with sticky notes and pencils, our children moved around the classroom, finding words and writing them on their notes. It was so much fun to see them active, focused, and excited to collect as many words as possible.

Math

In math this week, our children worked on a Missing Numbers Worksheet in the classroom. They did a great job identifying which numbers were missing, showing us that their number recognition skills are growing stronger. What we also noticed, however, is that writing the numbers was a bit tricky for many of them. This is perfectly normal at this stage, and it gives us a good focus for the coming weeks; we’ll continue practicing number formation and writing to build their confidence and fine motor control.

Science

Science this week was extra colorful! We made batches of red, blue, and yellow playdough; our primary colors and invited our children to choose two colors to mix together. With lots of excitement, they squished, kneaded, and rolled the dough in their hands to see what new color would appear. The joy on their faces when they discovered green, purple, or orange was priceless! Beyond the excitement of color mixing, this activity also gave them a wonderful workout for their fine motor skills, strengthening their little hands while sparking their curiosity.

Art

In art, we continued our color mixing adventure; but this time with paints! Each child chose two primary colors and mixed them together on a white plate using a paintbrush. The white background made the new secondary colors stand out beautifully, and our children were amazed to see the transformations happen right before their eyes. After experimenting, they came together around a large chart paper to create a group mural. Using their newly mixed colors, our children painted side by side, adding their own creative touches to the shared artwork. The final piece turned out vibrant and beautiful.

LE Café

This week at LE Café, our young chefs had the exciting task of making pancakes! Our children gathered in a circle to talk about food in a general sense and plan their course of action. Many shared their favorites like pizza and ice cream, but once pancakes were mentioned, everyone was eager to try making them so we planned to make them for the coming day. With chef hats and aprons on, our children looked ready for the kitchen the next day. Together, they mixed the ingredients “flour, eggs, sugar, and milk” taking turns to stir and whisk. They waited carefully as the batter was poured and cooked in the kitchen, showing so much curiosity and focus throughout the process. Finally, it was tasting time! Our children were so proud to enjoy the pancakes they had helped create. The activity was more than just fun; it gave our children the chance to practice teamwork, follow steps, and experience the joy of cooking together.
