Dear parents,
We hope you had a wonderful week! On our side, the children enjoyed discovering new ideas and concepts through hands-on exploration. They come together to learn, create, and collaborate in a fun and engaging environment, where every moment becomes an opportunity for growth and shared learning. Read on to hear some highlights!
We also want to wish you all a very Happy Easter if your family celebrates it, and for those who don’t, enjoy the long weekend! We look forward to seeing all of you back on Tuesday (April 22).
Large group
This week during our large group literacy time, we introduced the ‘WH’ sound. The children explored and practiced identifying vocabulary words that begin with these sounds, such as whale, whistle, whiskers, and whisper. The children enjoyed saying the words out loud and making connections to real-life objects and animals.
In our shape exploration this week, we focused on the pyramid shape. We compared it with the cone, which we had previously learned about. Together with the children, we observed and discussed the differences between the two shapes. One of the key discoveries the students made was that the cone has a circle at the bottom, while the pyramid has a square base. The comparison helped strengthen their understanding of three-dimensional shapes and their attributes.
Math
This week in math, we continued to build on our understanding of addition as the children’s skills in this area are growing more and more each day. We also placed emphasis on identifying numbers and counting objects to support their number sense.
In our first session, we worked on some addition problems together on the board. Each child had the opportunity to come up, solve a problem, and write their answer, which helped build confidence and allowed everyone to be actively involved in the learning process.
In the second session, we followed up with a worksheet activity that reinforced the addition concept. The children practiced solving problems independently by counting objects and writing the total. This helped solidify their understanding and allowed them to apply their skills in a focused setting.
Science
This week in science, we began exploring the world of flowers and learning about the different parts of a flower’s body! The children were introduced to the names of each part, and they enthusiastically shared their own ideas and observations during the discussion.
To bring the learning to life, we went outside to observe the flowers growing around us. The students had the opportunity to look closely at the flowers’ colors, shapes, and textures, and they compared the different types they found.
As part of our hands-on exploration, we conducted a simple experiment. Each child picked a flower and gently stuck it onto a piece of paper to see if flowers can survive once they are picked. This sparked great curiosity and thoughtful discussion about what flowers need to stay alive.
The students truly enjoyed this sensory experience and showed great interest in the colors, textures, and variety of flowers they encountered. We’re excited to see this topic continue to unfold with our class full of scientists!
Construction center
This week in the Construction Center, the Pre-K class worked on an exciting house project that spanned across three sessions. At the beginning, the children engaged in a planning discussion where they shared their ideas—some wanted to build a house, while others were interested in making a car.
After a thoughtful conversation, they agreed to start with a house. Together, they brainstormed the types of materials they could use, suggesting items like tissue rolls and different kinds of paper. Once the plan was in place, they began constructing by gluing tissue rolls onto hard paper and cardboard to form the structure.
They then painted the rolls using a variety of colors they chose themselves, bringing creativity and individuality to each piece. In the next step, they cut paper to create windows and rooftops, carefully adding these features to their buildings. The children showed excellent collaboration and creativity throughout the process, and by the end, they felt very proud of their completed house project.
Literacy
This week in literacy, our class continued to strengthen their skills in reading and writing CVC words, identifying letters, and working with digraphs, specifically focusing on the C and K (CK) sound. In the first session, the children were divided into three groups: one group worked on identifying letters, another group focused on reading CVC words, and the third group explored the CK digraph by looking at pictures and vocabulary that end, or include the CK sound, such as “duck,” “sock,” and “back.” In the second session, the first group practiced writing and identifying letters, while another group worked on a CVC worksheet focusing on words with the short U sound in the middle. The third group completed a CK worksheet where they cut out pictures and matched them to the correct CK word. The children were fully engaged throughout the sessions and are continuing to make great progress in their literacy development.
