Dear Parents,

We hope this message finds you well! This week in Pre-K has been filled with exciting discoveries, hands-on experiences, and joyful learning across all subject areas. From cooking pancakes inspired by a beautiful story, to exploring the sunny season of summer, strengthening our reading skills through movement, and measuring our height in math, the children were actively engaged every step of the way.

It has been wonderful to see their curiosity, confidence, and creativity shine as they connected classroom learning to real-life experiences. We are so proud of their enthusiasm and growth this week, and we are excited to share these special moments with you!

Large group

This week during our large group sessions, we had wonderful learning moments together across math, literacy, and daily classroom responsibilities.

In math, we explored two brand new shapes: the nonagon and the decagon. We carefully observed each shape and counted their sides together. We practiced counting the sides aloud as a group, helping strengthen both our shape recognition and counting skills.

In Literacy, our focus was on the digraph “ch” (C and H together). We discussed how when these two letters come together, they make a new sound. The students practiced saying the /ch/ sound and explored different vocabulary words such as chain, chick, chicken, chips, chocolate, and China. They enjoyed repeating the words, identifying the beginning sound, and listening carefully for the digraph. It is wonderful to see that students are developing a stronger understanding of digraphs and expanding their vocabulary with confidence.

Beyond academics, we are also very proud of how responsible the students are becoming. Each day, some students take charge of specific classroom responsibilities. These include fixing the calendar, updating the caterpillar, watering the plants, and counting numbers for the day. The children are showing great enthusiasm and ownership in completing their tasks. They are learning that being responsible members of the classroom community is an important part of growing up.

Math

This week in math, we continued exploring our topic of measurement by focusing on measuring height using a meter.

The students were first introduced to the meter and had the opportunity to observe it closely. They explored the numbers written on it and discussed how those numbers help us measure how tall something is. We talked about how measurement helps us compare heights and understand size in a more accurate way.

One by one, each student had a turn to stand straight and measure their height using the meter. They were very excited to see how tall they are and tried their best to read the number shown. It was a wonderful opportunity to practice number recognition while connecting math to real-life experiences.

We also learned that there are different units used to measure height. We focused on centimeters as the unit we use when measuring height. The students learned that centimeters are small units that help us measure carefully and accurately.

Literacy

To make learning more exciting, we combined movement with phonics practice. We set up hula hoops on the floor and spread out all 26 letters. One by one, students came forward to participate. Some students chose one vowel and two consonants to build CVC words, while others worked with one vowel and one consonant to practice blending two sounds together.

After selecting their letters, the children placed each letter inside a hula hoop. Then the fun began! They jumped from one hula hoop to the next, saying each letter sound as they landed. As they moved, they blended the sounds together to read the word. The physical movement helped them stay engaged while reinforcing their phonics skills.

The students were incredibly excited for their turn. It was wonderful to see them confidently sounding out letters, blending them smoothly, and celebrating when they successfully read a word. This activity not only strengthened their decoding skills but also supported coordination, focus, and confidence.

Science

This week in Pre-K science, we explored the sunny and exciting season of summer!

We began by talking about what the weather is like in summer. The students shared wonderful ideas, describing summer as hot, sunny, and sometimes very bright.

Next, we brainstormed fun activities we can enjoy during the summer season. The students excitedly mentioned going to the beach, swimming, having picnics, eating ice cream, playing outside. It was lovely to hear how they connect science concepts like weather with their real-life experiences.

After our discussion, we moved to the art room to bring our learning to life. Each student created their very own summer tree. They carefully colored the trunk of the tree brown, practicing their coloring skills and focusing on neatness. Then came the most exciting part! Using their fingers, they dipped them into green paint and stamped around the branches to create beautiful green leaves. Through this hands-on activity, the children explored texture, color, and creativity while expressing their understanding of how trees look during the summer season.

Art

This week, the Pre-K class worked on yet another art project. As we know, the class learned about planets last semester. Our students wanted to create a planet on canvas as a big project to connect to their love for this topic. After discussing as a class how they wanted to make it, they painted the background black. For the planet itself, we inflated balloons based on the size discussed with the students. We then provided them with magazines and glue. After they tore the magazines, they stuck the pieces onto the balloons. Each planet was created in three groups, and were then placed outside to dry. This project will continue, and in the next session, they will paint the balloons based on the planet's colors.

Library

This week in our library session, we enjoyed reading “Pancakes, Pancakes!”. This story is about a young boy who wants to eat a pancake and learns that before enjoying it, he must first gather and prepare all the ingredients. From flour to eggs and milk, he discovers the steps needed to make his delicious treat with the help of his mother. After reading the story, our students were inspired and excited. They suggested that we should try making pancakes at school, just like in the book! Together, we discussed the ingredients we would need and the steps we should follow.

In the morning, the children happily took part in preparing the mixture. They helped pour the ingredients into a bowl and carefully mixed everything together. It was a wonderful hands-on experience that connected literacy with real-life learning.

In the afternoon, we took our freshly made pancakes outside and enjoyed a lovely picnic on the grass. The students spread strawberry jam on top of their pancakes, just like in the story, and shared smiles and laughter together.
