Dear Family,
Week 6 was truly one to remember! Alongside our regular adventures of learning, exploring, and creating, we had the joy of celebrating Meskel together today. With you all joining us, our children’s performance of Abebayehush filled the day with smiles, music, and excitement. It was such a heartwarming moment that brought us all closer as one big family. The rest of the week was just as fun peeling corn, sorting fruits and veggies, hopping on shapes, and making art that was as bright as the holiday itself. Enjoy our Meskel selection of pictures and read on for our weekly details…..
Literacy
In literacy, we played with rhymes! For the first session, our children gathered on the mat with a set of flashcards. Each child picked one card and then matched it with a rhyming card from the other side. Laughter and joy filled the room as they discovered which words sounded the same. In the second session, they sat at their chairs to complete a rhyme matching worksheet with both pictures and words. The activity was simple, fun, and a great way for them to strengthen their rhyming skills.
“Pan rhymes with fan” -Leul
“Good, good” -Ismael
“Truck and duck and toy and boy” -Samuel
“Lunch and watch” -Liyat
Math
Math time was active and creative this week. Our first activity was a Shape Hopscotch outdoors by the infants’ and toddlers’ compound. Shapes were drawn on the ground, and each child got a turn to hop along them when called out. It was an energetic way to reinforce shape recognition while having fun. For the second activity, we brought out printed 2D shapes and gave our children Q-tips with three different colors to use as brushes. They traced around the shapes, decorating them with colorful dots and strokes. This playful activity not only strengthened their shape recognition but also supported fine motor skills and creativity.
“Hop hop hop” -Nai
“The rectangle and rhombus are the same” -Liyat
“I also want to paint with q-tips inside the shapes” -Leul
“I finish, give me paper” -Yemariam
Science
Our science sessions this week were all about exploring fruits and vegetables. For the first activity, we set up two containers one for fruits and one for vegetables and laid out pretend items on the mat by the whiteboard. One by one, our children got a turn to pick up an item, decide what it was, and place it in the right container. It turned into a fun little game where they cheered each other on, and we could see how confident they were becoming in recognizing different foods. For the second session, we made it even more exciting by heading outdoors for some real fruit and veggie sorting (and tasting). This time, our children had the chance to explore with their senses, feeling the textures, smelling the freshness, and of course, tasting the goodness. We enjoyed fruits like apples, grapes, and lemons, and explored vegetables such as sweet potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and broccoli. The tasting part made the learning extra fun and memorable, as our children discovered not only how to sort but also how these foods help us stay healthy and strong.
“Carrot is fruit you know why? Because you can eat it without cooking it” -Leul
“We can also eat tomato without cooking it” -Liyat
“Pepper” -Nai
“Lemon is like orange same same” -Ismael
“It’s so yummy, the broccoli” -Samuel
“I have this for snack” -Yemariam
Gymnastics
Gymnastics this week was both fun and engaging, giving our children the chance to use their fine and gross motor skills in a very hands-on way. Since we’ve been learning about fruits and vegetables all week and even colored corn in our art sessions we surprised them with real corn to peel and shuck. They worked hard and had so much fun pulling away the husk and silk, while also learning the names of the different parts of the corn: the silk, kernel, cob, and husk. It was a wonderful blend of movement, learning, and discovery that left them excited and proud of their work!
“This part is cob?” -Ismael
“I have millions of kernels on my plate” -Liyat
“This is bokolo” -Betselot
“I want to eat it now and I want it with chocolate like chocolate popcorn” -Leul
“The silk is hair” -Samuel
“We eat when?” -Yemariam
Art
For art this week, our children worked on a fruits and vegetables coloring activity in the art room. This wasn’t just about coloring, it was also a way for them to identify and recognize different fruits and veggies, and then match them with their correct colors. It was wonderful to see their excitement as they carefully chose the right shades and proudly completed their colorful work.
“Grape is purple, Samuel it’s not blue” -Liyat
“The carrot part is orange and the leafy part is green” -Leul
“This is corn and yellow” -Samuel
“See mine looks like real one” -Ismael
