A Week Filled with Joy and Discovery in Early Pre K!
Dear Parents,
We hope you are doing well! This week in our Early Pre-K classroom was filled with fun, learning, creativity, and exploration. Our students enjoyed a variety of hands-on activities that helped them learn, play, and grow together. Read on for some highlights from our wonderful week!
Large Group
We began our large group sessions by coming together in a big circle and greeting one another. Each student shared about their morning, talked about what they had for breakfast, and shared how they were feeling. We sang our Good Morning Song, took attendance, and practiced the days of the week and months of the year. We also counted from 1 to 15 and reviewed 2D shapes, including the triangle, square, circle, oval, diamond, star, and heart.
To finish our large group time, we read The Polite Cat, which encouraged the children to listen carefully and think about using polite words, being kind, and showing respect to others. These daily routines gave the children opportunities to practice speaking, listening, taking turns, counting, recognizing shapes, and becoming more confident in group participation.
Small Group
Math
This week in math, our class explored the concepts of heavy and light through a hands-on classroom exploration. They first shared their ideas and predictions before looking around the classroom for objects they thought were heavy or light. They had opportunities to hold, compare, and describe the objects while sharing their thoughts with the group.
We also practiced tracing numbers 1 to 5, helping our class become more familiar with number formation. These activities encouraged the children to observe, compare, count, and develop their early mathematical skills through hands-on learning.
Music
Our music session was a vibrant exploration of instruments! During the session, our students explored a variety of musical instruments and experimented with the different sounds and rhythms they could create. They listened carefully to the sounds and enjoyed discovering how each instrument could be played in different ways.
After exploring the instruments, the children chose the song they enjoyed the most, and we sang it together while playing along with the instruments. This activity encouraged the children to express themselves through music, make choices, listen carefully, follow rhythms, and participate as a group.
Literacy
During our literacy activity, we explored journaling through a creative and hands-on experience. First, each child decorated their journal cover by cutting colorful paper, adding ribbons, and gluing the materials onto their covers. They also used different colored markers to create their own designs and personal touches, making each journal unique.
After decorating their journals, the students chose their favorite colored crayons and drew pictures based on their own ideas and imagination. This activity supported their early writing skills, fine-motor control, creativity, self-expression, independence, and confidence as they made their own choices and expressed their ideas through drawing..
Gymnastics
During our gymnastics session, our class began by stretching and warming up their bodies. After warming up, each child chose two balls and practiced holding them while raising their hands up. They were challenged to continue the exercise without dropping the balls, helping them practice balance, focus, and body control.
The children then participated in a partner activity. Two children at a time lay on their backs while different materials were placed beside them. They picked up one item at a time and passed it to the other side, then sat up and continued the activity. Everyone enjoyed taking turns while developing their gross-motor skills, coordination, concentration, and ability to follow instructions.
Art
During our art activity, the children explored blow painting, a fun and creative way to make unique artwork. Using paint and their own breath, they blew the paint across the paper and watched as it moved in different directions, creating interesting lines, shapes, and patterns.
The children enjoyed experimenting with this technique and creating their own designs. The activity encouraged creativity, self-expression, breath control, and coordination while giving the children an opportunity to discover a new and exciting way to create art.
Library
During our library time, the children had the opportunity to choose books independently. They selected books that caught their attention, explored the pages at their own pace, looked closely at the pictures, and shared their observations.
After their independent exploration, we came together to read a book as a group. The children listened to the story and enjoyed looking at the pictures. This experience encouraged independence and helped develop their language, listening, observation, and comprehension skills.
