Dear Family,
How are you all doing? We’ve been feeling great and full of energy this week as we officially began our class projects, and it has been nothing but exciting for all of us. Let’s go through each day’s session together and give you a clear picture of everything we explored and created this week.
Happy Birthday, Yadon!
Large Group
Our kindergarten large group time was fun, interactive, and full of connection throughout the week. On Monday, we began by sharing about our weekends, giving everyone a chance to speak, listen, and connect with one another. For the rest of the week, we continued with our daily large group routines, revisiting familiar topics such as landforms, continents, and oceans, encouraging our children to recall, explain, and share their ideas with confidence. Toward the end of each session, we practiced color words together by spelling them aloud and taking turns writing them on the board, making our large group time engaging every day.
“I had a play date with Ismael, and we studied Amharic together with Ms. Lily” -Solomon
“We eat bread with Nutella and fight with teras(pillow) with Solomon” -Ismael
“With my dad, I go eat kitfo and went back to Summit and had ice cream” -Leul
“I sang the landform songs for Jamie’s dad because when we were going to my ballet class we wanted to try pee pee so we came to this school” -Liyat
“I go to church yesterday and I prayed with my mom” -Yadon
“I go Bora” -Yemariam
“Yeah, Bora” -Betselot
Literacy
This week in our literacy sessions, we explored a new and exciting lesson on colors in words. During our large group time, we practiced spelling and writing color words together. We then continued this learning during literacy time using worksheets at different levels. Some children matched colors to their written words, while others practiced writing the color names under each picture. This activity helped strengthen their spelling skills, expand their vocabulary, and build confidence in identifying and reading color words.
“Why did only the 3 of us got the hard one? Because we can do it fast?” -Leul
“I need another one like them” -Ismael
“Green is easy” -Yemariam
“Guess what? I can write it faster than anyone “ -Solomon
“This one is super easy let’s do another one” -Kian
“Can I sit with Jamie so I can help him? Cause he doesn’t know English like us” -Liyat
Math
This week, telling time turned into a fun challenge for our Kindergarteners! In our first math session, they became time readers, carefully looking at the clocks, saying the time out loud, and writing it down. In the next session, they turned into clock makers, using the written time to draw the hour and minute hands themselves. Through these playful practices, our children built confidence and enjoyed showing off their growing time telling skills.
“I don’t know how to write blue though and wait look at my hand it turned grey” -Solomon
“I also only know how to write red not blue I think blue is tricky” -Leul
“Solomon to get grey color you can use the pencil okay but slightly otherwise it’s gonna be black” -Liyat
“Elsa, Red please” -Betselot
“I like grey also, so I’m gonna color my number 4 grey cause it has a big space” -Kian
“Look at mine! You see it’s done” -Ismael
“I do the arms and you do the eye okay” -Samuel
Science
This week, our science project officially came to life and the excitement was unspeakable! Our children began turning their ideas and blueprints into real creations through painting, cutting, gluing, and building. They worked in small groups based on their chosen activities: some explored painting, others worked with clay, and some focused on gluing and constructing. Each group started with rectangular boxes as their base. Children who chose landforms like plateaus, mountains, volcanoes, and hills shaped and designed their ideas using clay, while those working on water bodies and land areas painted their models with care and creativity. In our second science session, once our projects had dried, we gathered in the art room to add special touches; sticking grass and trees, painting clay creations, and bringing their models to life. This is a process based project, and we are excited to continue building and completing these wonderful creations in the coming week.
“My mountain will be the biggest of them all. You know why? Cause it’s pointy” -Solomon
“I need two trees on my island so it looks real” -Kian
“My plateau is only flat at the top and the rest looks like a hill and a mountain like Solomon’s and Samuel’s project” -Leul
“Ocean Ocean” -Nai
“I need grass for me” -Ismael
“I want valley with my hills cause it has valleys” -Samuel
“I want sand for my desert so it will look very hot and dry” -Yadon
“Me and Betselot Volcano with clay and then we paint” -Yemariam
Art
Inspired by our literacy lesson this week, we connected it with our art session in a fun and creative way. Our children were given colored pieces of a basketball with numbers written on them and were invited to choose their own colors for each number. Some children wrote the color names next to each number, while others placed small color samples beside the numbers to help them remember their choices. Using their own plans, they carefully colored their basketballs. Each finished piece looked different, and all of them were beautiful; showing creativity and independence in their work.
“I can color it unique so it won’t look the same as everyone” -Solomon
“I want my basketball and Jamie’s to look the same so we can take it home and play with it” -Liyat
“So we need to cut only the ball with scissor and we can play with it like a real ballgame” -Kian
“I know how to play basketball” -Ismael
“I know how to play football and basketball too” -Samuel
“I can also play both so we cut the balls and we play with it after school at home” -Yadon
