Our Class in this week
Dear Parents,
We had yet another wonderful week at school, filled with engaging activities that sparked our students’ curiosity and enthusiasm! As a reminder, tomorrow (Saturday October 26) will be our first family day of the year, and the theme is international day. Please see the flyer we sent in the group chat for more information!
Large group
In our large group sessions, we began by discussing various fruits and vegetables, focusing on their benefits for our health. The children were excited to share their favorite fruits and learned about the importance of a balanced diet. To make this learning experience even more enjoyable, we sang the lively song, "I Like to Eat Apples and Bananas”, which was a hit!
After that, we transitioned into our morning routine. We sang our good morning song, which helped everyone feel welcome and energized. We took attendance, and also took a moment to talk about the weather and the days of the week, reinforcing our daily learning in a fun way. The children were enthusiastic and engaged, contributing their thoughts on the weather and what day it was.
Finally, we gathered for storytime and read the delightful book "I Am Not Cute". The students listened attentively, captivated by the story and its vibrant illustrations. It was filled with laughter, learning and lively participation.
Small Group
Library
In our Library Center, the children were busy exploring their favorite books, immersed in the joy of reading. They eagerly flipped through pages, captivated by the pictures, and shared their thoughts with friends as they read together.
After enjoying some group reading time, each child selected a book to take home, fostering a love for reading beyond the classroom. It's wonderful to see their enthusiasm for books and storytelling grow!
Math
This week in our math session, we had an exciting activity that really got our students engaged and actively participating! We focused on counting numbers from 1 to 10 using a fun matching game with flashcards. We began by counting together as a class, reinforcing our understanding of numbers. Once everyone was comfortable, we displayed large number cards on the wall, creating a vibrant visual aid for our students. Next, we introduced smaller flashcards, each featuring the same numbers.
The activity started with students eagerly picking a small flashcard from a box and then matching it to the corresponding large number on the wall. This hands-on approach kept them enthusiastic and motivated, as they repeated the process multiple times. Each student had the opportunity to match more than four times, allowing them to build confidence in their counting skills.
Ethiopian Center
This week in the Ethiopian Center, we had a fantastic time learning about Injera, a cherished staple of Ethiopian cuisine. We started our session with an engaging discussion about injera, where students shared their knowledge and experiences with this unique flatbread. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and curiosity! Next, we dove into the steps of making injera. In terms of organizing the activity, we first explained the ingredients and steps involved in making injera, igniting the kids' excitement for the hands-on experience. We assigned two students the task of bringing water, which was essential for our batter. With the water in hand, we mixed it with flour to create the injera batter. The students loved being involved in this process!
We then pretended to cook the injera on the mitad. The kids took turns pouring the batter, aiming to create circles, and they were thrilled to see their efforts take shape. The joy and excitement in the room was palpable as each child had the chance to participate! They left with smiles on their faces, eager to share what they learned about this important part of Ethiopian culture.
Literacy
This week in our literacy session, we embarked on a wonderful journaling activity that allowed our students to express themselves through their favorite colors and drawings. It was an exciting opportunity for creativity and communication.
Each student received their journal book and was encouraged to draw something that mattered to them. As they immersed themselves in their artwork, the room buzzed with excitement. When it was time to share, the students enthusiastically explained their creations.
Shi Yi proudly declared, “I drew a rainbow,” showcasing not just a colorful picture but also a symbol of hope and joy.
Ami shared, “This is my dad,” revealing a personal connection that warmed our hearts.
Keziah chimed in with, “I drew a house,” illustrating the comfort and safety of home.
This activity was more than just drawing; it fostered confidence as the students articulated their thoughts and feelings. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and it was a joy to see them engage with both their art and each other.
Gymnastics
This week in our gymnastics session, we kicked things off with a thorough body stretch. Stretching is essential for improving flexibility and preventing injuries, and it sets a great foundation for our practice. After warming up, we moved on to some fun joint exercises, focusing on movements that enhance our range of motion. These exercises not only prepare our bodies for more intense activity but also help us learn how to control our movements better.
After our warm up, the highlight of our session was practicing the forward flip. We started with some basic drills to build confidence and technique. It was exciting to see everyone supporting each other and cheering on their peers as they tried the flip. As always, safety was our priority, and we ensured that everyone felt comfortable and supported throughout each activity.
