The Joy of Learning Together In Early Preschool

Dear parents,

Welcome to our weekly classroom update! We are excited to share some of the wonderful learning experiences and activities your children enjoyed this week. From group time to hands-on activities, the children were actively engaged, exploring, learning, and having fun together. We hope you enjoy reading about our week!

Large Group

Our large group session in the morning was a wonderful start to the day, serving as a key part of our routine where the children come together to connect and learn. This time is so valuable for them because it encourages a lot of communication, allowing everyone to share their thoughts and talk about different topics in a supportive group setting. It was a busy and engaging session where we practiced many important skills while sitting together on the grass.

We spent time diving into our daily concepts, including reading books and working on our counting and numbers. The children were very active in the discussion, especially when it came to identifying the weather. They enjoyed talking about what they saw in the sky and describing the environment around them, which is a great way for them to build their vocabulary and observation skills. This routine of checking the weather and counting together helps the children feel confident and prepared for the day ahead.

What made this large group particularly special was the way the children practiced patience and social skills. They worked on waiting for their turn to speak and listening to their friends, which really strengthened their teamwork and communication. It was a really good moment for them to bond as a group before moving into their hands-on activities. This morning routine is such a positive way to build their social habits and get everyone excited for a day full of learning and discovery.

Art

Part one

Last week and this week, we used our color-matching activity to help the children develop their focus and coordination. We worked on this across several different days, and it has been wonderful to see how simple and engaged the children remain each time we bring it out.

For this activity, we used cardstock where we had already drawn the outlines of the sticks using markers that matched the stick colors exactly. The children’s task was to look at the drawing, and we would ask them, "what color is this drawing?".

Once they identified the color, we let them find the matching color of the stick from the pile. They then practiced their fine motor skills by putting glue on the stick and sticking it down onto the correct outline. They have been doing so well with this, and it is great to see them successfully matching the colors and staying so involved in the work.

Part two

In our follow-up art session, we started a brand-new canvas project by focusing on the background layer. We wanted the children to lead the way, so we asked them what color they wanted to use for this new start. Most of the students chose orange, and we think it is because we have been talking about orange so much during our "Orange Weeks." Our classroom discussions really helped them make this creative choice!

To begin, we helped everyone put on their art smocks, and then we started our background. We did this by taking turns, making sure each student had their own time to paint. They were really engaged and did a great job working together as a group. This activity is so important for our children’s destiny because it teaches them how to make decisions, practice patience while waiting for a turn, and work together to build something beautiful.

Literacy

This week in literacy, we continued our important work on fine motor skills by moving forward with our tracing and cutting practice. While last week was focused on the very first steps of learning how to hold a pair of scissors and trying to cut through simple paper, this week we wanted to give the children a new way to master these movements.

To do this, we prepared a special activity using different colors of boiled pasta. We divided the students into groups and set up the tables in the gross motor area so they had plenty of space. The children were all standing at the tables, which helped them stay active and focused. We gave each student their own pair of scissors, and they immediately began the task of cutting through the colorful pasta.

This activity is so important for our children’s destiny because it builds the strength and coordination they will need for everything they do in the future. They were really engaged and stayed busy with the pasta for a long time. It was great to see them practicing the right way to hold the scissors and seeing how much they have improved since the last time. They were doing so good and worked very hard to finish their task.

Science

In our science session, we explored so many important skills all at once, focusing on fine motor development, communication, teamwork, hand-eye coordination, and vocabulary. We had a table set up outdoors on the grass with various animals tucked away under layers of colorful yarn. We invited the children to begin the "rescue" by carefully removing the strings to see which animals were hidden inside, turning the table into a hub of discovery and excitement.

The atmosphere was wonderful as the children worked with great focus and intent to unwrap each layer. This process was excellent for their hand-eye coordination and fine motor strength, as their hands worked hard to manipulate the yarn. They had to think and problem-solve as they figured out how to pull the strings off different shapes, like long giraffe necks, wide elephant ears, and bumpy dinosaur tails. As each animal was finally revealed, the children shouted with joy, using their growing vocabulary to call out the names of the animals they discovered and talking about the colors they saw.

It was heartening to watch the teamwork and communication naturally unfold throughout the session. The children were constantly talking to one another while they worked, pointing out the animals they found and excitedly guessing what might be under the next pile of yarn. They also showed great kindness by helping their friends when the yarn got a bit tricky or stuck. They stayed completely engaged and curious, showing so much patience as they worked together in the fresh air. This session was a beautiful way to help the children build their confidence and enjoy the thrill of science through hands-on, collaborative play.

Math

Our most recent math activity was all about sorting orange materials from a variety of different items. This activity turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all. We prepared a mix of objects with different colors, textures, and shapes, and the children were asked to carefully observe and identify which ones were orange. Once they found an orange item, they placed it in a special box.

Before starting, we encouraged the children to look closely, think carefully, and talk about what they saw. They were very enthusiastic, naming colors, sharing ideas, and helping each other. It was wonderful to see how focused and involved they were throughout the activity. This activity not only helped them improve their color recognition skills but also supported their attention to detail, sorting abilities, and teamwork. Everyone participated actively and did a great job, making the whole experience educational and engaging!
