A Classroom Full of Questions and Discoveries!
Dear Parents,
Welcome to our weekly classroom blog! We are excited to share the wonderful learning experiences and discoveries our students enjoyed this week. From exploring numbers and shapes to investigating different textures, creating artwork, celebrating Ethiopian culture, and discovering beginning sounds, our classroom was filled with curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning. Let’s take a look at the exciting experiences we shared together!
Large Group
We began our mornings by greeting one another and sharing how we felt and what was happening in our mornings. We then sang our Good Morning Song before checking how many of us were present and how many were absent. Our students counted how many friends were in class and practiced writing the corresponding number. We continued our morning routine by reviewing the days of the week and the months of the year, counting aloud up to 20, and enjoying a story together. We also revisited our previously learned Zoo-phonics sounds and shapes, introducing a new three-dimensional shape: the cone. Through these familiar routines, our students continued developing their communication, counting, early literacy, and shape-recognition skills.
Literacy
We began our literacy session by revisiting our previously learned Zoo-phonics sounds. Our students practiced remembering the sounds and then matched fruit toys with the corresponding beginning sounds. They carefully observed the fruits, identified their names, and listened for the sounds they heard at the beginning of each word. This playful activity helped strengthen their phonological awareness, listening skills, and ability to connect beginning sounds with familiar objects.
Math
During our first math session, we explored counting and number recognition using colorful pompoms, counting bears, tweezers, and small bowls and cups. Our students carefully picked up the pompoms and bears with tweezers, counted them, and placed them into their containers. This hands-on activity encouraged one-to-one counting, fine-motor coordination, and concentration while making early math learning fun and engaging.
In our second math session, we focused on shape recognition and matching. Our students received flashcards featuring different shapes we had previously discussed. They then explored the classroom to find objects and materials that matched the shapes on their cards. This activity strengthened their ability to recognize shapes in their surroundings while encouraging observation, problem-solving, and independent exploration.
Science
Our first science session invited our students to explore different textures and investigate what happens when water and cornstarch are mixed together. They used their senses to feel and observe the mixture, made predictions about what might happen, and tested their ideas through hands-on experimentation. As they explored the changing texture of the mixture, our students practiced making predictions, observing results, and discovering how materials can behave differently when combined.
Art
Our art session gave our students an opportunity to experiment with yarn and paper as creative materials. They explored how these materials could be used in their artwork, discovering different textures, shapes, and ways of creating. Through this open-ended experience, our students expressed their creativity, strengthened their fine-motor skills, and explored new ways to represent their ideas through art.
Ethiopian Cultural Center
At our Ethiopian Center, we celebrated the beauty of Ethiopian culture through music, traditional clothing, and cultural materials. Our students began by choosing their favorite traditional Ethiopian songs. They then dressed in traditional clothing and explored the different cultural objects and materials available in the center. This meaningful experience encouraged our students to connect with Ethiopian traditions, appreciate cultural expression, and learn about the importance of music, clothing, and everyday objects in our heritage.
