Dear Family,

Happy Friday! How was your week? Well, ours was a little bit of a reflection week as we looked back on our projects, revisited what we had learned, and shared our discoveries during different class sessions before moving on to new ideas and lessons. Let’s take you through our week!

Large Group

Besides our usual Large Group routines, this week’s book was Over and Under the Pond. Since we had explored prepositions a few weeks ago, we used the story to revisit the idea of things being over and under the water. And with this week’s topic being the Five Oceans, it was the perfect way to dive into our new learning!

Throughout the week, we explored the five oceans using the map and globe in our classroom and learned a little something special about each one. We looked at where each ocean is located and talked about how these enormous bodies of water connect different parts of our world.

Literacy

This week, we practiced our handwriting using a special handwriting sheet. During our first session, we started with something familiar; our own names! We practiced writing our names while noticing the different heights of our letters; tall letters, small letters, and letters that go below the line. In our second session, we focused on tall letters such as b, d, f, h, k, l, and t. We practiced noticing how these letters reach higher than the other letters on the line and worked on forming them carefully. Learning to recognize these different letter heights helps our children understand where letters sit on the line, making their handwriting neater and more organized as they continue developing their writing skills.

Math

We went back to counting in tens and ones this week to recap our previous lessons, along with reviewing our graph work. During both sessions, our children practiced with different worksheets, counting groups of tens and adding the leftover ones to find the total. We revisited how counting in tens helps us count faster, while counting the ones helps us find the exact number. With more practice, our children are becoming more comfortable putting these counting techniques together and working out their answers independently.

Science

We have been checking on our plants closely and attentively as they grow, and this week it was time to see how much they had changed! During our first session, we sat with our plants, observed their growth, and drew what we noticed. We talked about the changes we could see and how our little seeds had started growing into plants. For our second session, it was time for our plants to leave their little cups and move into the ground! Beforehand, we worked with our school gardener to prepare the soil so it would be ready for our children to explore safely. Once everything was ready, our children took turns digging small holes, carefully removing their plants from their cups while keeping the roots intact, and gently transferring them into the ground. Now we can continue watching them grow, hoping to see them become taller and stronger!

Art

This week in Art, we explored how we can use simple shapes to create something recognizable; and our children chose to make people using shapes! Connecting to our previous discussions about family portraits and all the drawing we have been doing, our children planned and created their own people using different shapes. They arranged the shapes, added details, and decorated their drawings in their own creative ways. Next week, we’ll continue exploring what else we can create using shapes, with our children choosing different objects to bring to life!
