Dear parents,
We hope this blog finds you well! We had a beautifully engaging week in our Pre-K class. In math, we continued our focus on “about time.” In literacy, we continued practicing reading sentences, while the other group worked on reading CVC words.
We also enjoyed journaling, gymnastics, library visits, and social studies. In social studies, we continued learning about the community.
Overall, the class had fun and participated enthusiastically. Students worked together and independently without competition. Read on for some more details…
Happy Birthday Arthur!
Large Group
This week, our large group sessions were as delightful as ever! The class loves to sit together and sing, read books, have conversations about different topics, complete classroom job responsibilities, and learn from each other. This session helps boost their confidence because they are all participating together.
This week, we continued learning about different shapes each day, both two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional shapes. This helps them remember the different shapes.
This week’s sight words were “about, them, use, and they”. They learned these sight words so quickly! These sight words help them learn more words for reading simple books.
As always, we completed our calendar activities and our caterpillar work, along with classroom jobs. For the morning message, since some of our students know how to read, they are reading it for the class by taking turns each day.
Literacy
This week in literacy, our first group had the opportunity to strengthen their reading skills by reading a variety of sentences, both in groups and individually. They showed great confidence and enthusiasm as they practiced. In the second session, students worked on a hands-on worksheet activity where they read sentences and completed them by cutting and sticking the missing word. It was wonderful to see the progress they are making, as many students were able to complete the task with increased independence and accuracy.
The second group continued practicing the CVC words from the first session. In the second session, they completed the worksheet. They worked on the beginning sounds of the CVC words by looking at the pictures. Then, they wrote the letters and practiced reading the CVC words.
Math
This week in math, the children continued developing their understanding of telling time. During the first session, the students practiced reading time using a large clock displayed on the board. The activity was interactive and engaging, as the children took turns coming to the front to move the clock hands while another friend read and identified the time shown. This gave every child an opportunity to participate, practice speaking, and strengthen their understanding of how clocks work.
In the second session, the students completed worksheets focused on telling time. They carefully looked at different clocks and identified the times shown. The children worked hard to match the clock hands to the correct times and showed growing confidence in recognizing and reading time independently. This activity supported their number recognition, observation skills, and understanding of daily routines and time concepts.
Social Studies
This week in social studies, the children had the opportunity to think about and share what they would like to be when they grow up. We began by remembering and discussing the different community helpers we have learned about before and talking about the important jobs they do in our community.
Each child then had a chance to share their own ideas and future dreams with the class. The children showed great excitement and confidence while speaking about their interests. Some shared that they would like to become doctors, while others said they wanted to be bank workers, engineers, firefighters, or police officers.
After sharing their ideas, the children expressed their thoughts through drawing. They carefully created pictures of themselves in their future roles, adding meaningful details to show the different tools, uniforms, and places connected to each job. This experience encouraged language development, creativity, confidence in speaking, and a deeper understanding of community helpers and their roles in society.
Art
Art time was extra special this week, as our class got to work on our final canvas project of the year! As a way to connect to our learning about time this year, our students decided to make their very own clock. This project supported our math sessions, since we have been learning about the concept of time. The whole class couldn't wait to get started, and to turn their ideas into something they could see and touch.
First, students painted the background red. Then they went outside to collect soft branches that had fallen from a tree. They then went on to stick the branches around the circle to form the clock’s shape. For the numbers, students dipped each number into black paint and stamped them around the circle. After that, they decorated the edge of the canvas with popsicle sticks. The final result turned out amazingly! Our students have been creating truly wonderful art projects over the past few months. Their ideas were all their own, and they were connected to what they learned and what they observed. We are very proud of them for the dedication they have shown.
