Growing Through Every Little Discovery In Pre-K!

Dear Parents,

We hope this blog finds you well! Our week in Pre-K was filled with exciting learning including counting, letters, science, and art. The children had a wonderful time exploring new concepts, participating in hands-on activities, and learning through play. Let’s take you through some of the highlights from our week…

Large group

This week in our large group sessions, we explored many exciting things! We started by updating our calendar with the help of our calendar helper. We also added another day to our number caterpillar with the help of our caterpillar helpers. We are growing together, one day at a time.

During our sessions, we also explored rhyming words, colours and shapes. We reviewed the hexagon and pentagon before introducing two new shapes: the heptagon and octagon. Our children were excited to count the sides of each shape and discover what makes them different. They also had opportunities to practise cutting out different shapes and counting their sides through a variety of scissor activities. It was a fun way to explore shapes while developing their fine motor skills. Of course, we also enjoyed counting together, making our large-group sessions both engaging and fun!

Math

In mathematics, we continued exploring missing numbers. We first introduced this concept last week, but our children needed a little more practice, so we decided to revisit it this week. We reviewed what a missing number is and how to identify one. To make the concept easier to understand, we used a variety of activities, including number flashcards and arranging numbers in the correct order while identifying the numbers that were missing.

During our second session, our children also completed a worksheet to practise what they had learned. These activities gave them more opportunities to recognize number sequences and understand how to find missing numbers. It was lovely to see their confidence grow as they became more familiar with the concept. They understood the idea much better this time, and we had a fun week strengthening our math skills!

Literacy

In literacy, we continued learning about vowels. Since we introduced vowels last week, we wanted to give our children more opportunities to explore and practise recognising them. This time, we used pipe cleaners to form the vowels, making the learning more hands on and engaging. Our children also explored the vowels in their own names by identifying and pointing them out.

During our second session, they completed a worksheet where they practised tracing and copying the vowels. We also encouraged them to look for vowels in written words and distinguish them from other letters. These activities helped reinforce their understanding while giving them different ways to recognise and become familiar with vowels.

Science

This week in science, we explored living and non-living things. During our first session, we discussed what makes something living or non living. We talked about how living things need food and water, breathe and grow, while non living things do not carry out these life processes. After our discussion, our children became little explorers in the classroom, looking around and identifying examples of living and non-living things in their surroundings.

In our second session, we revisited what we had learned before taking our exploration outdoors. We walked around the school environment, observing and identifying different living and non-living things. Our children also had opportunities to share their ideas and explain why they thought something was living or non living. It was wonderful to see them using their observations and thinking skills to make connections between our classroom discussions and the world around them.

Art

This week in art, we connected our creativity with our science topic of living and non-living things!

We took our learning outdoors, where our children had the opportunity to explore their surroundings and observe the different things around them. With paper and drawing materials ready, they became little artists, drawing the living and non-living things they could see in their environment.

It was lovely to see how they used their observations and creativity to represent what they had discovered. This was a wonderful way to bring our science learning into art, allowing our children to express their ideas through drawing while making connections with the world around them.
