Dear Family, how have you all been? Well, our children kept impressing us this week with their continued love for learning and their teamwork throughout our activities. We had a little bit of everything, from number challenges and word building to exploring magnets and getting creative with corn. Let’s take you through what we did!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LUMINA!

Large Group

Continuing our exploration of the five oceans from last week, this week we made it a little bit of a “stand and say the number” kind of week! We wrote three digit numbers on the board and invited our children to read them aloud. At first, it was a little challenging, but that only made them more excited and eager to give it a try. Our kinders love a good challenge! With a little practice, they became more confident and soon found it much easier to read the three digit numbers. We continued practicing throughout the week alongside our usual large group routine and song breaks.

“On Saturday I was swimming in a swimming pool and then we went back home and on Sunday my mom traveled to Ghana.” -Lubono

“I eat burger and milk” -Omna

“I eat every food. I go hair salon” -Arthur

Literacy

This week’s literacy sessions were all about putting our learning on paper! During the first session, our children played a fun word building game. They were given letters in different colors and had to match each letter to its corresponding color in the boxes on their worksheets. Once they had placed and written all the letters in the correct order, they blended the sounds together to read the words. During our second session, we practiced vowel sounds using a word family worksheet. Our children had to identify the missing middle vowel sound shared by two words and write the correct vowel in each word. It was a little challenging, but also interesting practice as they listened carefully to the sounds and noticed how changing a vowel can change a word.

Math

We started exploring addition by adding one! During our first session, we used classroom objects to make the idea more hands on. Our children counted a group of objects, added one more, and then counted again to find the new total. During our second session, they practiced the same idea on a worksheet, finding the number that comes next when one is added. Starting with real objects before moving to paper helped our children connect what they could see and touch to the numbers they were writing. It also encouraged them to recognize number order and understand the beginning idea of addition.

Science

This week, we learned about magnets! We talked about how magnets can pull certain metal objects towards them without having to touch them first. We also discovered that not everything is magnetic; some things are attracted to magnets, while others are not. Using our classroom magnet wands, our children became little magnet detectives and searched around the classroom for objects that would stick to their wands. In our second session, we took our investigation outside for a magnetic things hunt around the compound. They were excited to test different objects and discover which ones were magnetic and which ones were not. At the end, our children shared what they had found and reflected on their discoveries. Their little reviews were nothing short of interesting and enjoyable to read. You can find them right below!

Gymnastics

We had a little change of pace in gymnastics this week with a corn shucking activity! We started with our usual exercises before sitting together to talk about corn as a plant and how it grows. We looked at its different parts, including the husk, silk, and kernels. We also talked about how corn is a warm season crop that grows well in the warmer months. Then came the fun part; Our children got busy peeling back the green husks and removing the silk to reveal the corn underneath. They carefully worked to loosen and remove the kernels, using their fingers and hands throughout the process. This was a lovely way to strengthen their fine motor skills and hand muscles while exploring a real plant. And the best part? The kernels were boiled afterwards, and we got to enjoy them together as our afternoon snack!

Art

We carried our corn exploration into the art room, where we used the corn cobs, husks, and silk from our gymnastics activity to create our very own corn crafts. Our children painted the corn cobs yellow and used the husks and silk to represent the different parts of the corn plant. They glued the pieces together, arranging the husks around the cob and adding the silk wherever they wanted. Rather than making every craft look exactly the same, we gave our children the freedom to decide where each part should go and how they wanted to put their creations together.
